What degree are you pursuing and why?

I am pursuing an MBA with a concentration in Entrepreneurship. My journey began at UNC with the Medical Coding Certification course in 2014. This course served as the springboard for my professional healthcare industry certifications as; a certified professional medical coder, a certified compliance officer, a certified healthcare auditor, a certified healthcare collections manager, and a certified HIPAA compliance officer. The UNC Charlotte course work will help me gain the knowledge necessary to help me set a dynamic growth trajectory for my healthcare consulting company.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business over others?

I chose the Belk College because of the broad range of courses offered and the scheduling flexibility in each semester. I was particularly excited about the summer semester course offerings. Once I was able to satisfy the prerequisites, my course schedule has fallen into place. I’ve been able to successfully meet a balance between my coursework and my professional work schedule.

Tell us about your job. What lessons have you learned in your courses that you were able to apply to the job?

I am a healthcare consultant providing private practice professionals and group leadership insight into revenue cycle performance. The accounting and finance coursework has helped me with balance sheet development and top-line growth potential. I have been able to set a growth trajectory to expand my company’s offerings. Specifically, in the realm of auditing and the infusion of internal audit and process control opportunities.

What activities are you involved in when not working/studying?

Outside of my professional and academic life, I enjoy the art of furniture design and construction. I also enjoy lake life and powering across Lake Norman on a jet ski. My family has been relentlessly supportive of my life adventures. I revel in spending time with my two nephews. They both have an uncanny ability to keep life “real” for me. I cannot possibly overemphasize the importance of family support. If I am ultimately successful in life, it will be because of my family.

What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?

The greatest takeaway from my coursework has been working with, and learning from, my fellow students. The group project work has helped build great friendships and almost limitless opportunities to learn. I also greatly appreciate the kind help and assistance from the Belk College professors and support staff. When I stop and think about this experience, I will always remember it was the people I encountered who made it memorable.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone considering a master’s program?

I would highly recommend the Belk College to anyone exploring a graduate program. The coursework is challenging. The flexibility in semester scheduling helps solidify the balance between maintaining your professional life while hitting your coursework benchmarks.

How valuable do you feel this degree will be to your career?

Attaining my MBA is more than an academic accomplishment. It will be a major life accomplishment! There are invaluable lessons I am learning. I am already thinking outside of the box about the direction my business is going. It is very rewarding for me to recognize how much more expanded my thought processes and analytical abilities have become. While I greatly appreciate all my undergraduate degree has given me, I am almost overwhelmed by my explosive personal growth since beginning my MBA program at the Belk College of Business.
