Online Hybrid MBA Courses

Ranked as the #20 part-time MBA in the nation by Businessweek, UNC Charlotte’s MBA is designed with quality, flexibility, and accessibility in mind. With the increasing demands on students’ time, the Belk College MBA program is starting an exciting new option. Starting in Fall 2016, the MBA core classes will be offered in both a traditional, face-to-face format and in a hybrid online format. Blended (also known as hybrid) classes will be offered half face-to-face and half online. For students with robust travel schedules and busy lives, this option will allow students to attend core classes face-to-face every other week with online learning taking place the alternating week. This online hybrid format will give students the flexibility of online learning without losing the opportunity to engage with professors and network with classmates.

Benefits of the online hybrid MBA

  • Same opportunity to interact and engage with peers, professors, and community leaders.
  • Added flexibility to accommodate busy schedules while accomplishing the MBA.
  • Continue to work with the same faculty and curriculum.
  • Expand your network through classmates, professors, community leaders and alumni.
  • The online portion of the courses will enhance what is being learned in the classroom through activities such as discussion boards, online case studies, collaborative online projects, and research assignments.

Courses offered in the hybrid format:

  • MBAD 6112 The Economics of Business Decisions

FAQs

What is a hybrid course?
Hybrid courses blend the benefits of online learning—namely flexibility and the ability to learn at your own pace—with the benefits of in-person learning—networking, team building, and more. The Belk College of Business MBA hybrid core courses will have students meeting in the classroom every other week.  For the online portion they can log onto the online components from anywhere in the world.

Why is the Belk College MBA Program offering hybrid classes?
In an effort to meet the needs of working professionals, the MBA program decided to offer at least one section of each core course in a hybrid format beginning in Fall 2016.  Today, many individuals are unable to suspend the many demands of busy careers and family responsibilities to travel to campus for every class meeting in their pursuit of their degree. The transition to offering hybrid classes will help keep the MBA program relevant and competitive while extending the program’s reach to audiences that are seeking more flexibility and accessibility.

How are hybrid and online courses different?
Courses in the hybrid format will spend half of the class time in a face-to-face format in our Center City Building and half of the class time working online.  While hybrid learning, sometimes called “blended learning,” mixes classroom and online instruction, courses in an online format strictly meet online with no face to face contact with the instructor.

Will I get done with my degree faster if I take hybrid courses?
Possibly - many of our students will find they are able to pick up an additional class due to the flexibility of the hybrid offerings. The hybrid courses meet in-person once every other week, providing students with extra time during the off weeks to take an additional class if desired.

Am I getting the same quality of education?
Yes. Hybrid courses are taught by the same professors who teach classes that meet 100% in-person. The courses cover the same material and professors ensure that the same high-level quality is being delivered in both formats.

Is it the same curriculum?
Yes. Hybrid courses cover the same material that is covered in the in-person classes. The expectations and quality are identical.

Is hybrid only offered for my core classes?
While there may be an occasional elective course offered in the hybrid format, only the core classes will be offered on a regular basis in the hybrid format.

Will this increase my tuition?
No. The Belk College of Business understands the value of a high-quality education without an exorbitant price tag, so hybrid courses will be offered at the same price as those classes that meet solely in-person, making them flexible and cost effective.

Will this make classes bigger?
No. While the hybrid option will attract additional students to the program, class sizes will continue to remain the same due to multiple sections. The Belk College of Business is committed to providing students with a classroom that values interaction and high-quality networking opportunities, so class sizes will not be expanded beyond what they are currently.

How do I find courses that are offered in the hybrid format?
When registering for courses via the class schedule search, please refer to the pull down menu for Subject and click on MBA.  Then refer to the menu concerning Instruction Method.  Within that menu are three designations: (1) All, (2) Face-to-Face Instruction, and (3) Hybrid: Face-to-face & Online. Click the Hybrid selection and you will see the MBA hybrid courses offered for that term.

Who do I contact if I have any questions concerning hybrid courses?
You may contact Dr. Gary Kohut, Director of the MBA Program, or Corey Henderson, Associate Director of Graduate Student Services.
