Advising

Do I need academic advising?

We encourage all students to meet with your program advisor throughout your time in the MBA program. It is especially important for newly admitted students to schedule an initial meeting to discuss course planning and plan to complete prerequisites.

Who is my advisor?

The Director of the MBA Program is the official advisor for all MBA students. Other members of the Graduate Business Program staff (Program Manager or Director of Student Services) may also provide guidance on academic matters.

Why are my course requirements different from other students in the program?

Each student's program of study is based upon his or her previous academic background and is specific to his/her situation. Contact the Graduate Business Program Office if you did not receive a Program Sheet or have any questions.

Registration

How do I register for classes?

All student registration takes place using the online portal, 49er Express. Information on 49er Express is available on the UNC Charlotte website.

What is considered a full-time load for an MBA student?

Nine credit hours is considered full-time in the MBA program. More than nine graduate credit hours is generally not recommended. The University's registration system limits graduate students to twelve credit hours. If you plan to take more than twelve credit hours, you must fill out an Overload/Late Add form and have it approved by the Director of the MBA Program. Please request permission early in order to expedite the registration process.

Can I take classes outside the MBA program?

If you want to register for classes in another academic department, you will first need to obtain approval from the MBA program director. In addition, you will also need to obtain approval from the department you are seeking a registration request.

Do I have to fill out the University's immunization form?

This form is required only if you plan to take classes that begin prior to 3:30 PM Monday – Friday, or if you are an international student. If you enroll in the Flexible MBA and plan to take only MBA classes and their prerequisites, return the form with a notation that it does not apply because you are taking classes in the evening.

International students should contact the International Admissions Office for additional information.

I received an "I" in my final class. Will I need to register next semester?

You are required to be enrolled at UNC Charlotte during the semester in which you graduate. If you have an Incomplete or are taking your final class at another university, you must register to take MBAD 7999, Master Degree Graduate Residence, a one-credit hour course designed for this purpose. It is non-graded and requires no attendance, and helps students meets the registration requirement. You will have to pay the one-credit-hour tuition.

Note that this policy does not apply to students who graduate in August and walk in the December commencement.

When and how often do your classes meet?

A majority of MBA classes are held in the evening at UNC Charlotte’s Center City campus. Fall and Spring evening classes are one evening per week, Monday – Thursday, 5:30 pm – 8:15 pm. We also offer day classes in the MBA program. Fall and Spring day classes typically are one day per week, Monday – Thursday, 12:30 pm – 3:15 pm. Summer session classes are two evenings per week, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 pm – 9:15 pm. The MBA program has special summer sessions which may vary from the University's schedule. Course schedules are available in the "Curriculum" section of the MBA website.

Grades and Academic Status

What are the grade requirements for the MBA?

A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is necessary to graduate. If you receive a "U" or more than two "C"s, you will be suspended from the program. Procedures to request reinstatement and grading policies may be found in the Graduate Catalog.

I've received an "I" in a class. How long do I have to complete the work?

An incomplete grade of "I" is given only at the discretion of the instructor. The missing work must be completed during the next semester in which you enroll, or no later than 12 months after the "I" was assigned if you are not enrolled, whichever comes first.

Upon completion of the work, the instructor must complete a Change of Grade form and submit it to the Registrar's Office. If the "I" has not been changed during the specified time, the grade will automatically change to a "U." This will result in an automatic suspension from the MBA Program. To request reinstatement to the program, a written request should be sent to the Director of the MBA Program.

My professor said he would add me to the class, but I did not get a grade. What happened?

You are responsible for your registration schedule. Faculty members cannot register you for a class. Please bring a Special Request form to the Graduate Business Program office if an instructor has given you permission to register for a class that has otherwise been restricted. Once the authorization or permit has been entered in the Graduate Business Program Office, then you need to register via 49er Express.

I just got my grades and have a "U" in a class I thought I had dropped. What happened?

You are responsible for your registration schedule. Faculty members cannot register or drop you from a class. You may submit a Graduate Petition if you want to withdraw from a class after the deadline has passed. Depending on the circumstances, this form may require the approval of the instructor, the MBA Director, and/or the Dean of the Graduate School.
